Connecting your Mac to your iPhone has never been easier…
No need to share a crowded Starbucks, Airport or Hotel wifi connection, create your own!
Back in the day, I was connecting my iPhone 3GS with my white Macbook from 2008 and it was working fine but sometimes it made my life very difficult and wouldn’t connect.
Since OSX Yosemite and iOS 8, the “Personal hotspot” feature has been greatly improved.
I now connect my iPhone 5 to my iMac/Macbook Air very easily and the best thing is that I don’t have to turn on a whole bunch of settings every time I want to use it!
How to turn “Personal hostpot” “ON” once for all
Turn Bluetooth “ON” on both your Mac and your iPhone
Your Mac needs to support Bluetooth 4.0 or “LE” (Low Energy). To find out if your Mac does support this version of Bluetooth, simply click on the black apple on the top left corner of your screen, then “About this Mac”.
Click on “System Report” then Bluetooth. Your Mac should says “Bluetooth Low Energy Supported: Yes”.
If not, then you won’t be able to enjoy this feature.
On your iPhone, simply swipe from the bottom up to reveal the “Control Center” then tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it on.
Turn on the “Personal Hotspot” feature on your iPhone
Go to “Settings”, then “Personal Hotspot” then turn it on.
Ensure to have the same iCloud account setup on both devices
On Mac, go to System preferences (Black apple on the top left corner) then iCloud then check what Apple ID you’re using.
Check on your iPhone under Settings>iCloud that the same Apple ID is used.
Use the “Personal Hotspot”
From now on, wherever you are located, as long as your Mac and iPhone are nearby, you can click the wifi icon on the menu bar and your iPhone will appear as a network option for you to connect to.
That’s it, no more passwords to enter, it simply connects right away!
